Salem Shorts – No Plastic Bags In Your Recycling!
Learn more about why you can’t put plastic bags in your recycling!
Salem residents with proof of ID may off their yard waste at the Salem Transfer Station on Swampscott Road on Saturdays and Sundays, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., starting March 12, 2016. Due to the demolition and associated work at the transfer station site, those dropping off materials are reminded for their own safety to stay within the designated drop-off area only. Yard waste should be dropped off in a paper yard waste bag or dumped loose at the designated area on the site. Yard waste in plastic bags will not be accepted and stumps and branches greater than 2” in diameter will also not be accepted.Residential trash and construction and demolition debris will not be accepted at the Transfer Station at this time. Residents who need to dispose of excess residential trash may purchase the City orange overflow bags for curbside collection. Overflow bags are available for .50 each at the Department of Public Services, the City Collectors Office, Crosby’s Marketplace, and Winer Brothers Hardware.
Those seeking to dispose of construction and demolition debris should plan to bring it to another location. Other transfer stations in the area that may accept this type of debris include:

What NOT to do: Do NOT overload the bins.
Mayor Driscoll, along with Barbara Warren, Salem Sound Coastwatch Executive Director, SalemRecycles members, Salem Chamber, & Salem Main Streets, kick off the new Park Your Butts campaign! We’re showing off the jazzy new sticker that Salem Sound Coastwatch’s Talking Trash Teens (TTT) helped design. TTT also mapped the locations of the current butt bins and recommended new locations in an effort to get more use of the bins. Great collaboration and effort by all involved!
