Volkswagen

Posted on April 19, 2013 by Mike

Beginning in 2005 and continuing into 2006 models, Defendant Volkswagen designed, manufactured and sold Volkswagen Jetta model vehicles with defective door wiring harnesses The wiring harness was defectively designed in that it was too short. As a result of the defectively short design of the wiring harness, it is only a matter of time before wiring harnesses in the defective Jetta Models develop a short in the electrical circuit. Indeed, many of the defective Jetta Models have already experienced problems caused by the defectively designed door wiring harness.

The problems that are experienced when the wiring harness in a defective Jetta develops a short in the electrical circuit almost always have the same or similar symptoms and are easily identified. The common experiences include a loss of some or all of the controls located on the door that contains the defective wiring harness, including failure of the power window controls, gas latch release, trunk release and power mirror controls.

As alleged, Defendant knew that the door wiring harnesses were too short at the time that they sold them to the Plaintiff and Class Members. Defendant knew it had made the wiring harnesses 80mm shorter to save costs and that this would lead to premature breaking of the wiring in the door wiring harnesses.

The class consists of all entities and natural persons who purchased a Volkswagen Jetta manufactured between January 1, 2005 to January 1, 2006.

My entire driver door electrical is out so I always have to leave my gas lid open so I can put gas in my car and I have to manually lock my car, i also can't open my trunk with the door and can't open my windows. Does this lawsuit only apply to people who bought brand new 2006 jettas, or does it also apply to people who bought them used?

My wife bought a used 2006 Jetta that immediately began needing jump starting because the defective wiring harness did not allow the proper signal to be sent to the computer telling it that the car door was closed. Sitting in the car with the door closed and the radio off, my wife locked the door with the key fob clicker and the radio came on! Bought a new battery, had it recharged three times due to this electrical problem, and paid two hundred dollars to not get the car fixed at a VW dealer before an honest repair facility found this problem.

I bought a 2005 jetta tdi from my brother inlaw and noticed that the battery kept running down. I first started to perform a current draw test, found nothing until I opened the drivers side door. then all hell broke lose including my moon roof opening by its self. I removed the outer door skin and found several broken wires. I patched as many as I could and 3 months later had the same problem with both the doors now. Is there an updated harness that is the correct length, 80mm longer and if so what is the part number??? So that I can replace them both.

I have a 2005.6 Jetta TDI also experienced issues with moon roof opening and closing by itself. I have also had my drivers side door show open on the display and alarm that it was open when it was physically closed. I research and found door harness had same issue as everyone else. I slid the boot back on the door harness between the door and the frame and found one wire broken. I believe a ground wire. I put an extension wire to the broken wire and now door works fine and shows closed. Now I am experiencing an Air Bag fault?? The little electrical bugs are making me think I made a mistake buying a VW.

I have the same problem with my 06 Jetta TDI. Started with the moon roof opening and closing at will, couldn't unlock the car from the inside, had to take the key out and use the fob. Initially my trunk release would not work using the control on the driver door and the trunk "open" light stays on all of the time. We must open the trunk with the key because the wireless control will not work also. My son was in a different town and the realized he was almost on empty. He pulled over to fill his tank and now the fuel release does not work. Once, he arrived home (on fumes), we read the operator's manual to manually open the fuel door. I called two local VW dealers today and they said that there is not recall on this issue. We will be checking the wiring today to see if this is an issue. VW really needs to correct this.

I'm not sure how else I can put this but all I know is that it started with the loss of my driver side window functions and now it has NO power to the door what so ever. Some times it even faults and claims the door is open when it's clearly closed. Window is stuck open a bit and almost all the wires are split in the harness. Going to see if I can do some soldering.

I immediately opened the door and cut the boot open (very carefully) to expose the inner wiring and every single wire is snapped! Jeremy E. said
1445 days ago

I am having the same issue, the driver's side window will not operate. The wiring harness is too short and the opening and closing of the door causes the wires to eventually crack and break. The solutions is to either cut, splice and soldier an extention on the wires or replace the entire wiring harness, the replacement harness is longer to correct the issue. Volkswagen needs to come up with a solution to this issue for their customers. They push safety with their vehicles but how safe is it when your windows and doors won't lock or open properly.

Debra L. said

VW Jetta 2005 same window problem. Took to dealership. Replaced wiring harness, expensive day. No one at the dealership indicated there was a known problem with this when I took it in.

Andrew L. said
1428 days ago

I experienced this electrical issue and found that length isn’t the only issue, the most important wires are too thick to bend when the door closes so they snap.
My fix: Slit the boot open and added a butt splice to the ground wire(orange), giving it plenty of length and strength. I also reinforced another wire’s weak point with electric tape, hopefully keeping it from splitting completely.
Took me 15 min. It would take a pro 5.
Cost, one pack of butt splices.00
Don't wait to take care of it. You have nothing to lose.

Was having all of the above issues. Investigated harness and going all wires to be most of the way broken. Put back together, checked for recall status. No recall. Prices out parts and labor. 192 for harness 150 for labor. Part is so commonly defective that it is STOCKED at local VW Dealership. Since reassembly everything has ceased working completely. Window controls. Door lock control and airbag fault light is now coming on as well.

I cannot get gas anymore or operate my windows. I can only lock my door manually with my key from the outside. I'm just curious to know why they haven't recalled it? I am having the same issues. The door ajar light stays on, about every other time I start my car, and I lose all control of power windows, trunk release, and fuel door release. I also noticed today that this issue prevents my turn signal in my driver side mirror from functioning.
First the air bag light, which wasn't fixed properly even after the recall, then the clock spring, which prevented my horn from sounding, or made it beep at odd times. Most recent, the headliner in my car began to separate from the roof light and edges, and is now a saggy mess. Now this door ajar warning light that causes loss of power and a constant annoying warning sound. There seems to be a lot of issues that could become genuine safety concerns. And they all seem to be shared issues of the masses.
Will gladly join the suit if allowed.
I have a 2006 Jetta.

Lorna M. I'm also having the same problems as well. I was told by a mechanic that the 2006 models were the guinea pigs for VW and that they have since corrected the problems in the newer models, but they will not take the responsibility and have the problems recalled. The head liner was almost sitting on the top of my head and I had to cut it out and because the warranty was up they quoted me almost ,000.00 to have it replaced and I took to an auto trim place and paid 0.00 to replace it.

I have a 2007 VW Jetta and I have been experiencing several electrical issues. First it started with my truck randomly opening parked and while I drive! I have to remove one of the trunk's support arms so it won't open all the way while I'm in motion. Now, I'm experiencing battery drain and currently I have the radio's fuse pulled out because I believe this is draining my battery throughout the night. (Used a multimeter and it clearly shows it's pulling well over 2.5amps w/ the fuse and .5 amps w/out the radio fuse). Finally, I'm experiencing the occasional door ajar light and the beeping is driving me crazy! The dealership's reaction is always "We have never seen or heard of these issues." Yeah right! Nearly 6.5 years and I still don't have a solution for my trunk and it will be another few years before my door ajar is figured out properly!

Drivers side door on my 2006 VW GLI Jetta has lost all power. Didn't realize this was a common issue, how on earth is there not a recall over this defective wiring. Was looking to get another VW, not now after this lack of ownership and taking responsibility. To make matters worse, I needed gas and broke off my fuel door to do so. Just ordered a (after shipping) new one, can't wait to see how much this problem is going to cost once it's all said and done! Thanks VW for knowing of this problem and not addressing it!

I drive with the door completely closed and the door ajar light stays on... open and reslam the door same thing. Went down to the local auto parts store and bought a coil of 16 wire and 14-16g butt connectors. Spliced both ends of the orange wire and connected them with a short length of new wire to allow more slack. Cinched ends together with connectors and put the whole mess back in harness and casing. Worked! All issues are gone. This cost me under

I have a 2005 new jetta 2.5L and a couple months ago my back passenger door stopped locking and recently my driver door control panel wouldn't roll up any windows or lock the doors, unlatch the trunk or gas tank. Not sure if this has to do with the wiring, but about 2 years ago my airbag light came on . I would like to be part of this suit.

My 2005 Jetta passenger side door has stopped working. I can't use the window controls, I can't lock the doors except the driver door with the key. I can't open my trunk or open my gas gage. Also my car think the door is constantly open, so it chimes for a few minutes as well as lights up on the display not allowing me to see anything else. I've been dealing with the trunk release and driver side lock button for a while now. The first to go and most important was the gas door release, in a car with no emergency trunk release is dangerous. Not to mention how inconvenient and unsafe it is to constantly have to reach over to the passenger side to unlock the doors for people. Most recently my fob is having intermittent issues of not unlocking the driver side door and not always chirping when I lock from it.

'06 Jetta I had a gas latch problem when the (new) car was a week old. Dealership repaired it. Then the rear disk rotors wore out but the brake sensor light never came on. Dealership said the rotors/pads didn't have sensors installed on the inside of the pad, hence no light came on. They fixed it for free. Flash forward to today when my front passenger window won't go up. I've called the dealership to inquire, am not happy. I have a '12 Jetta, no problems so far. So far.

I've been having problems with my door locks for a few months now.
I read above how the wiring harness caused problems with draining the battery and alternator, and that has been the biggest issue with my car. I've had to put 3 new batteries in over the last 3 years. The anxiety of not knowing if your car will even start is just the icing on the cake. If there is any further info on how to be contacted about the lawsuit, I would love to know about it.

I have the same issues with the wiring and was quoted about 0 from a repair shop to fix the driver and passenger front door. The trunk is completely useless now. I had to tie it down from the inside to get it to latch. Now the power steering is out and the car is completely undriveable. The head liner has almost completely fell down. I havn't been able to afford repairs to these "minor" inconveniences because I've already put over 00 in engine and radiator repairs. At 105,000 miles the timing chain went out and the repair costs were more than a new engine! Now I have a 2005.5 with a new 2012 engine with about 20,000 miles on it and its still undriveable. WHAT A POS CAR IT HAS BEEN!! In fact every german engineered vehicle I have been in is piece of garbage..including Mercedes! Good thing the Germans didn't take over the world as we would have the worst engineered things ever!

Hi guys,
This all just happened to me. I opened the rubber boot in between the door and the frame of the car (open from the frame of the car, push latch up and then bottom should release out, then down to unhook the top) pull back the boot gently and you will see the orange wire cracked/frayed/broken. If you have extra wire, soldering iron and some electrical tape just patch it right from there. You don't have to remove the door skin or inside panel or even replace the harness. This took me 45 minutes to fix and since I extended the large orange cable, I will never have this problem again. :)
I am a female so it did help that I have little hands, but needle nose plyers work just as well.

Jessica B. said

Also, to stop the 'door open' beeping: close all doors and disconnect your negative terminal from your battery. When you connect again it resets everything so the car will think your door is closed all of the time

I have the same issue with driver window not working. Out of warranty range, my 2005 Jetta is now 9 years old and just over 100k miles. So I'm paying the dealer 0-0 to repair. I also have problems with the battery draining when the car site overnight, and have to get a jump start. I'm pretty sure the defective wiring harness and the battery drain are related. I also have a problem with the trunk latching if I use the release button on the door or the release button from the fob. A few days ago, I began having numerous problems on the driver's side. The automatic door lock stopped working, the automatic trunk lock, the driver window will not roll down, the driver side mirror will not work, the gas cap will not open and I continue to get a warning sign on my dashboard panel. All of these problems occurred at the same time a few days ago. Prior to taking my vehicle in to be fixed, I researched these issues and found that alot of 2006 Volkswagen 2.5 owners have also experienced the same issue which appears to be a manufacturing defect in which the wiring harness is [being made] too short -which causes damage to the various wires within that harness. When I purchased my vehicle from Williamsburg Chrysler Jeep Dodge, I also purchased an extended warranty from Fidelity Warranty Services. I chose the Gold-Plus Plan which was right under the Platinum. This morning, I was notified by the dealership and informed that the source of the problem was the wiring harness which would need to be replaced. Unfortunately, however, my Gold-Plus extended warranty is refusing to cover the necessary repairs and I've been told it will be approx 0 to repair.

Ha, Now with the 2010 Jetta. Just 56K miles. I believe there is another problem. In my case it began with the rear driver door lock. It stop locking. It was intermittent. Then it move to the passenger door and final to the driver door. Some people in different blogs say it is the door harness. Others replaced the door lock motor from the rear driver door and it fixed all of the doors. A friend has the computer cable of the car. The diagnostic blame all the door latches and motors! I believe, the VW engineers designed the worst electrical mechanisms to wire the doors.

Today, while driving on the interstate, I noticed that my passenger side window was slightly open. The control on that side of the car already stopped working years ago so if a passenger wants to open the window, I have to control it from my side. I tried to let it up but to no avail. Then I let the driver side window down just to mess about and see what was going on. It is now slightly open and neither will close no matter what I do. Its a 2005 Jetta and now the back doors wont unlock with the remote when its really hot outside. And I have to reach in and unlock the back doors to get my toddler out of the car. Same issue with my 2005 1/2 Jetta 2.5. Rear passenger side door lock works sometimes and not others. Totally random, so I can't count on being able to lock the door. VW dealer told me it was a known issue and the 'fix' was to replace the entire wire harness at a cost of about 00-1500. I Purchased a 2006 VW Jetta manufactured 09/05 a few weeks ago for my daughters first car. Two weeks latter the car needed body work on the drivers door . After the outer skin was removed and replaced the door would not lock or unlock either by key or control. After reading many complaints about this harness being to short when manufactured I had to apologies to the body mechanic as I thought he caused the problem that didn’t show up until the door was repaired. I am sure this same problem is the culprit in the malfunction. First an inherent transmission valve body problem and now this. Even the dealer will recommend a rebuilt valve body over a factory new one. What’s next I wonder ? I will just remove the outer door skin and elongate the harness wiring on both front doors myself for now until a back door fails.

Very disappointing!! Don't buy this car!! The company was more focused on their profits, than it was on good customer relations!! It is the TDI model, I paid lots of money for it, thinking I was going to be driving it for at least 10 years.....stay away from volkswagon!!

My wife is the owner of a 2006 Jetta which began having problems with the driver side window not working properly. It would first work at random until it stopped working all together. The door open light indicator would stay on.
As a former VW technician, I diagnosed the problem, found several broken wires inside the dust cover located between the door and frame. The harness did not have enough slack to allow enough movement when opening and closing the driver door. Ordered a new harness and replaced at which time, no more problems experienced with my wife's car.

I recently purchased my 2006 Jetta. Within one month the sunroof started to open and close randomly. The driver's door would not unlock the car. After another month I notice the interior light not working. So I was told to have harness in door replaced. Since the harness was replaced the key fob no longer works to lock or unlock car, however it will pop the trunk open. The lights still only work sporadically and none of the door locks work in fact sometimes I cannot get the car to open from the outside unless I climb through it and pull the handle from the inside. After reading this review and just replacing my battery this weekend I realized that my battery may have been drained from this ongoing problem so I now have over 0 to fix this problem and it is worse than when I started. And lastly my open door light on driver's side continues to come on sporadically as well. I guess I should be thankful that at least my windows and gas switch work. However climbing through a car and strapping a toddler and in the dark is no fun

Im having the same problem on my 2006 VW Jetta TDI. Im so upset with Vw they should of left open the settlement knowing that it was a continuous problem. Vw doesn't care about their buyers, only about money. So so so sad.

I'm glad to have found this forum... I bought my Jetta about 9 months ago- I love it- but I have named her Christine due to all the mysterious and random things that occur while driving i.e. Sun roof opening and closing by itself- windows randomly not wanting to roll up- doors not locking. It's been more of a nuisance than anything else. Here's my kicker... my driver door is totally dead as of the last 3 days- and I just realized I can't fuel up!!! I guess I will be investigating a way to manually open the gas door! This should be interesting to see how much this fix will be.

My 2005 New Jetta TDI passenger door is dead 90% of the time. We dare not use the window for fear it will not close and more unsettling is it does not allow us to lock the car.

I'm having the same issue with my car where the Doral Open or unlock electrically including the window. Cute first racial issues and I cannot sell my car because of this. It's worth five thousand and no one will even take it for 3k. I'm worried about spending the money fix it and losing more money

As Al Pacino said in "Scent of a woman", I like to take a flame thrower to this!
Wife bought the 2006 to help out a friend leaving Hawaii and I ended up eating an electrical lemon. Wiring boot on drivers door.. friend helped mitigate, but now my passenger door window is in the down position

Same issues here, no power at all on the drivers side door. Can't open trunk, close gas door, roll down windows, or anything. Has anyone had luck with reaching out to their Volkswagen dealer about this? I couldn't join the suit because my brother made the repairs, not an actual shop.

I have the same issue with broken wires within the boot of the drivers side door wiring harness. My windows, trunk and dashboard information was malfunctioning when I noticed this wire breakage. I googled the problem and realized that there was a class action lawsuit concerning this issue. Can I take my car to the VW dealership and get this fixed without any funds coming out of my pocket.?

I had to get a whole new door lock module for my drivers door. Alarm wasn't working, courtesy light didn't come on, and I could open my drivers door with the alarm set, and the alarm wouldn't go off. The whole thing was 500 bucks to change out.

The door half worked for a good month before failing entirely. I am well over the 100k requirement and the warranty. Lights failing, driver side unresponsive etc. Looking at another 500 for myself.
